Windows Dictation Hotkey: Start, Stop and Cancel

One key starts the dictation, the same key ends it, and Escape throws it away.

Luram AI Agency · Updated

The key is the Alt on the right of the spacebar, the one marked Alt Gr on some keyboards. Press it and the app starts listening. Press it again and the text lands in whatever window had the cursor. Escape while it is listening throws the recording away and inserts nothing.

With the default local speech provider, recognition stays on your PC. An optional remote provider changes that behavior. The destination application receives the text when you insert it.

If the key does nothing

Open Diagnostics from the menu on the left. It lists every key the app has seen. If pressing the key writes nothing there, another program has claimed it first, and the usual suspects are gaming keyboard software and remote desktop tools. Settings lets you pick a different key.
